ถือเป็นวันขึ้นปีใหม่ของไทย ซึ่งปฏิบัติสืบเนื่องกันมาแต่โบราณ และเป็นวัฒนธรรมประจำชาติอันงดงามที่ยังมีอยู่ในวิถีชีวิตชาวไทย คำว่า “สงกรานต์” มาจากภาษาสันสฤต หมายถึง การเคลื่อนย้ายของพระอาทิตย์เข้าไปจักรราศี แต่ความหมายที่คนไทยทั่วไปใช้ เฉพาะวันและเวลาที่พระอาทิตย์เคลื่อนเข้าสู่ราศีเมษในเดือนเมษายน

     ปัจจุบันเทศกาลสงกรานต์ เป็นวันที่ 13-15 เมษายน ของทุกปี และเป็นวันหยุดของไทย

     พิธีสงกรานต์ เป็นพิธีกรรมที่เกิดขึ้นในสมาชิกในครอบครัว แทบทุกบ้านเรือนของไทย มีการประพรมรดน้ำด้วยน้ำอบไทย หรือน้ำหอมให้แก่กันเพื่อความชุ่มชื่น มีการขอพรจากผู้ใหญ่ การรำลึกและกตัญญูต่อบรรพบุรุษที่ล่วงลับ มีการสรงน้ำพระที่บ้านหรือที่วัด เพื่อให้เป็นการเริ่มต้นปีใหม่ที่มีความสุข

     มีการทำบุญตักบาตร ถือว่าเป็นการสร้างบุญสร้างกุศลให้ตัวเอง และ อุทิศส่วนกุศลนั้นแก่ผู้ล่วงลับไปแล้ว โดยถวายพระภิกษุสงฆ์

     ความสนุกสนานของการเล่นน้ำในช่วงอากาศร้อนจัดของไทยในเดือนเมษายนทำให้ เกิดการประชาสัมพันธ์ในเชิงการท่องเที่ยวว่าเป็น ‘Water Festival’ เป็นภาพของการใช้น้ำเพื่อแสดงความหมายเพียงประเพณีการเล่นน้ำ แต่อย่างไรก็ตาม ชาวไทยควรไม่ลืมพิธีอื่น ๆ ที่กล่าวข้างต้นเพื่อเป็นศิริมงคลแก่ชีวิตและครอบครัว

การจัดงานมหาสงกรานต์ในกรุงเทพมหานคร 12-15 เมษายน 2551 มีกิจกรรมในพื้นที่รอบเกาะรัตนโกสินทร์ดังนี้

• 12 เมษายน 2551 ตักบาตรและสรงน้ำพระพุทธรูป 4 ภาค ณ ท้องสนามหลวง อาหาร, ขนม พื้นบ้าน และการแสดงทางวัฒนธรรมจากภาคต่าง ๆ

• 12-15 เมษายน 2551 ถนนข้าวสาร เล่นน้ำและประกวดแต่งกายแบบไทย โดยให้มีการรณรงค์การเล่นน้ำสงกรานต์อย่างถูกวิธี

• 12-13 เมษายน 2551 สวนสันติชัยปราการ ถนนพระอาทิตย์ บางลำพู และวิสุทธิกษัตริย์ เล่นน้ำสงกรานต์บ้านดินสอ ขอเชิญชมงานประเพณีของไทย และเชิญทุกท่านร่วมสนุกสนานเล่นน้ำสงกรานต์ กับเรา ณ รอบเกาะรัตนโกสินทร์ ข้อมูลอื่น ๆ ชมได้ที่

    Songkran is a Thai beautiful traditional New Year which starts on 13 -15 April. People in Thailand conduct the bathing ritual or gifts to the elders and respected ones on New Year’s day. Once the elders receive the gifts, they will sprinkle the water and the perfume on top of the youngs’ heads to give them blessings.

     Besides the throwing of water, people celebrating Songkran may also go to a wat (Buddhist monastery) to pray and give food to monks. They may also cleanse Buddha images from household shrines as well as Buddha images at monasteries by gently pouring water mixed with a Thai fragrance over them. It is believed that doing this will bring good luck and prosperity for the New Year.

     The Thai people celebrate this festival with water. Everyone gets soaking wet and since it is the hottest season of the year, the custom is quite refreshing, supported by the religious belief that anything old and useless must be thrown away or it will bring bad luck to the owner.

     The most obvious celebration of Songkran is the throwing of water. People roam the streets with containers of water or water guns, or post themselves at the side of roads with a garden hose and drench each other and passersby. This, however, was not always the main activity of this festival. Songkran was traditionally a time to visit and pay respects to elders, including family members, friends and neighbors.
